MEET DR. VAN

Hi, my name is Dr. Michael VanDerschelden, or Dr. Mike as most people call me.

I’m an expert in health and nutrition, in human performance and exercise, and my number one passion in my life is teaching people how to transform their health and lives.

I want to start off by saying that I'm literally just like you. I don't have some crazy 'I was raised by a pack of rabid wolves' story or had some huge obstacle in life that was either going to kill me or make me stronger.

I had what would be a pretty normal life experience, in today's world.

Like many of you, I struggled with my health. I didn't understand what what wrong with me. I couldn't perform the way I needed in order to be successful in all facets of my life.

This led to many things like depression, anxiety, fear, etc.

However as time went on, and I became educated on what was wrong and what I could do about it, I took the most important step in life that everyone MUST DO in order to make a change... I took action!

And wouldn't you know it, my life turned around.

While I'm being a bit light-hearted with my advice above (as you've undoubtedly heard that a million times by now), I truly believe that if I was able to overcome the obstacles I was faced with, you can too.

But it's important I share a bit about my past in order for you to understand how I got to where I'm at today.

My Past

I vividly remember the day at the ripe age of 14 when I went into the doctor’s office for my continued and never-ending allergies. The doctor entered the examination room, took a brief look at my medical history and symptoms in my chart, and without blinking an eye, BAM!

Without a smidge of eye contact, he took out his prescription pad and added a third prescription drug to my arsenal of allergy medications, because two medications for allergies were apparently not enough. Then the doctor abruptly left without saying a word. I'm not sure he even asked what my name was...

But I wasn’t just on multiple allergy medications.

I had just finished my third cycle of Accutane for what doctors called severe cystic acne. (Just google the side effects of this terrible drug and you will be frightened.) Things like severe dryness of the lips, mouth, and nose; cracking and peeling of the lips and skin, especially on the face; and severe depression.

The large red sores and blisters over my face, along with dried and cracked skin from the Accutane caused my face to frequently bleed nearly every time my face was touched. Putting on a shirt over my head too fast, my face would bleed. Wrestling with my little brother, bleed.

I mean, what could be a more effective strategy at impressing girls then having big red and purple blisters all over your face with dry cracking skin at the corner of your mouth?!

A few years later after the Accutane, I was also put on yet another antibiotic for my acne, along with an array of prescription-strength creams, lotions, and potions that added more fuel to the fire.

My allergies were constant, no matter how many meds I was on. My acne never seemed to improve, my skin was a dry cracking mess, and my self-esteem was at an all-time low.

To make matters worse, I remember taking a communication course freshman year in college that basically forced me to public speak. Just the thought of public speaking made me so nervous and anxious that it would cause my hands to shake uncontrollably.

I remember attempting to deliver a 5-minute speech with note cards in my hand and literally being unable to read them because my hands were shaking so bad.

My Mindset

I had it ingrained in my mind that whatever symptom I was dealing with at the time, all I would have to do is make another trip to the doctor to get a quick fix, to get another set of prescription pills, and that’s exactly what I did.

When I told the doc about my nervous shaking when trying to give a speech, he seemed very concerned. So concerned in fact that he pulled out his prescription pad and prescribed me another medication, this time for beta-blockers.

Sound familiar?

Bottom line... I was a sick eighteen-year-old.

There had to be a better way right? A way back to a state where my body could function like it was supposed to without all the drugs and the annoying symptoms I was dealing with.

You would think that this experience over the last 4 years would serve as a wake-up call for me, a sort of ‘seeing the light’ type of moment, but you would be wrong. Very wrong.

Some people can learn from a single mistake, and some never seem to get a clue. Fast forward eight more years and I found himself in another problematic situation.

The accumulation of all the bad food, prescription drugs, and poor lifestyle habits were taking a toll on my brain function, concentration, and focus as I was in professional school obtaining my doctorate.

I was always able to will myself to get all A’s in school; it just took me lots of will power and countless hours studying by myself in a library devoid of any distractions to do so.

My classmates didn't seem to have the same studying issues I was going through, so I curiously asked why.

I found out that many of my classmates had a prescription for Adderall, also known as ‘the study drug,’ which was a medication to treat ADHD.

I remember one night before a big test, one of my classmates let me try one of their little study drugs and wow… was that some magical experience!

Within 30 minutes, the act of studying transformed from a boring event exercising tons of willpower to a very exciting and engaging activity! It actually made subjects like organic chemistry and pharmacology fun.

Who would have thought that was possible?

I was hooked. My next mission was to get a prescription to this miracle study drug.

A few weeks later, I found myself talking with my doctor about how I was having a hard time concentrating and studying. I told him how I would daydream and get distracted easily.

The doctor made it seem like these traits were extremely serious and a big cause for concern for someone in their early 20’s to have, and proceeded to give me a prescription to Adderall. Problem solved!

I was really getting the hang of this health care system. Have a symptom, go to a doctor and get a prescription!

I was now fully hooked as the perfect 'lifetime customer' for Big Pharma...

My Awakening

A common theme I saw in school was the incredible intelligence of the human body, specifically how the body has this miraculous ability to heal itself, as long as it’s provided the proper nutrients and devoids itself of toxins. The human body and its complexity absolutely fascinated me.

One day, while I was studying for one of my classes, I had that 'aha' moment where I had an awakening as they say.

I began to wonder if my own health issues were because of the toxins I was putting into my own body.

If you've read this far into my story, you already know the answer to this question. It's a resounding yes with all caps.

I realized I wasn’t respecting the intelligence of my body. I wasn’t listening to what my body was trying to tell me. I wasn’t practicing what I was learning. I wasn't practicing what I was preaching. I was talking the talk, but not walking the walk.

This awareness of this break in my personal integrity began to eat at me until I finally became fed up. I was done. After all, how could I expect patients to respect me and take my advice on getting healthy while I wasn’t following that very same advice?

This moment of questioning my ethics and integrity served as my breakthrough, my catalyst for change.

Three years later, I graduated with honors and was on the Dean’s list. No study drugs or medications needed.

From that moment, I took my study of health seriously, applying everything I was learning to my life. I found my calling in teaching and lecturing to the masses on the importance of health.

My Path Forward

I became a best selling author. I now own my own Chiropractic practice where I get to help people transform their health and life every single day. Life is good. Scratch that. Life is phenomenal!
